You can search for Ann Arbor released inmates through the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office inmate search on their website. Look up people by last name, first name, date of birth, or booking number. The results show the inmate's name, booking date, current charges, bond amount, housing location, and next court date. Mug shots may also be available. One thing to note: the online system only shows people who are currently in custody. It does not keep a public log of all past bookings and releases. For historical data, you need to contact the jail or file a FOIA request.
If you want to check by phone, call the automated line at 734-973-4500 and follow the prompts. Give the person's full name and the system will tell you their custody status. The jail direct contact at 734-973-4770 works too if you have the name and a booking number or date of birth.
Note: The Washtenaw County online inmate search shows current inmates only and does not display historical Ann Arbor released inmates data.

Ann Arbor Released Inmates FOIA Process
Ann Arbor has a dual FOIA system. Police records go through the Police Records Department FOIA Coordinator at a2policerecords@a2gov.org. All other city records go through the City Clerk at cityclerk@a2gov.org. This is different from many cities where one office handles everything. Make sure you send police records requests to the right place or it will take longer.
You can submit a FOIA request by email, in person, by mail to the Justice Center at 301 E. Huron Street, or by fax to 734-994-9928. Your request must be in writing. Include your full name, address, and contact info. Describe what you want in enough detail that staff can find it. Put "FOIA" or "FOIA Request" in the subject line if you email it. No special form is required under MCL 15.231, but the city has forms you can use for convenience.
The fee structure in Ann Arbor is reasonable. The first hour of staff search time is free. After that, you get billed in 15-minute chunks at the lowest-paid capable employee's wage rate plus benefits. Paper copies are $0.05 per sheet. CDs cost $1.00 each. Mailing is at actual postage cost and gets waived for responses that fit in a business envelope (up to 8 pages). If fees go over $50, you need to pay a 50% deposit. An indigency waiver covers the first $20 if you can show you get public assistance or cannot afford the fees. You need to submit an Affidavit of Indigency with supporting documents.
Response time is five business days. The city can extend by ten more days for complex requests. If your request gets denied, you have 180 days to appeal in writing to the City Administrator. You can also file a civil action in Washtenaw County Circuit Court within 180 days of a final denial. Fee disputes follow a similar process but with a 45-day window.
State Tools for Ann Arbor Released Inmates
The OTIS database is free and run by the Michigan Department of Corrections. It covers current state prisoners, parolees, probationers, and anyone released from state prison in the past three years. Search by name, MDOC number, or offense type. OTIS does not cover county jail data. If someone was held at Washtenaw County Jail on an Ann Arbor charge and never went to state prison, they will not be in OTIS.
The ICHAT system from Michigan State Police costs $10. It gives a statewide criminal history that includes arrests and convictions from all 83 counties. ICHAT is more thorough than OTIS for a full criminal background check. For court records from Ann Arbor cases, use MiCOURT to search by name, case number, or attorney. The 15th District Court is in the same building as the police department at 301 E. Huron Street. Its phone number is 734.794.6750. Cases under MCL 333.7411 and HYTA records will not show up in public searches.
VINELink at vinelink.com lets you check on the custody status of someone in Washtenaw County. You can sign up for alerts and get a call or email when their status changes. The Ann Arbor Police also runs a crime dashboard that updates weekly with incident data. It is not the same as a released inmates search, but it can help you track what is happening in specific neighborhoods. The CLEMIS public crime search also covers Ann Arbor with data that updates every 24 hours.
Note: Ann Arbor Police jurisdiction covers the city only; University of Michigan campus arrests are handled by the UM Division of Public Safety and Security, a separate agency.
